Want to play at the highest level of basketball? Picking the correct grassroots program has never been more important. In the past decade, three shoe brands have launched national “circuits” alongside the national independent circuit; Nike, adidas, and Under Armour. Nike started things off with the Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) in 2010, followed by adidas 3 Stripes Select Basketball (3SSB) & the Under Armour Association (UAA).
After running the numbers, our team found that which platform a prospect competes on is one of the most important things they can do to improve their chances of going pro. Nearly every American-born player competed for a grassroots club, and the overwhelming majority of them competed on a modern-day shoe circuit.
- There are currently 495 players rostered in the NBA or on a two-way contracts
- The “shoe-circuit” era has been around for 12 years.
- 57.8% of the players currently rostered in the NBA competed on for shoe circuit program. This is particularly notable considering that 17.7% of the league played before the wide-spread acceptance of the shoe circuits in 2010 (over the age of 30).
- 409 - that's the count of every NBA player who graduated high school in 2011 or after - otherwise labeled as the shoe circuit era.

After factoring out international talent, that leaves 353 American-born NBA players. Of those 353 players, 283 (78.2%) played on a modern-day shoe circuit;

The remaining 77 players competed for independent grassroots programs post 2010. As the numbers indicate, playing on a shoe-circuit is not the only successful route to the NBA; 21.75% of the American-born players in the NBA 30-and-younger (after inception of shoe circuits in 2010) competed on an independent grassroots program.
