Taison Chatman, the 48th ranked player in the class of 2023 according to our rankings, has just verbally committed to Chris Holtmann and Ohio State. Chatman joins Devin Royal, Scotty Middleton, and Austin Parks, making a very solid 2023 recruiting class for Ohio State.
Chatman has always been a lethal scorer, but this season on the 3SSB circuit with D1 Minnesota, he was able to show all levels of his game.
In this article, I breakdown Chatman's game and how I see him fitting into Ohio State's system his freshman season.
Chatman is a 6'4 combo guard that can score it at any level. The most lethal part of his game is his ability to shoot the basketball. Chatman can raise it and shoot over anybody put in front of him. He can shoot it off the catch or off the dribble. Chatman is great at creating for himself. His ball handling is very impressive. His handle is very tight and he is great at getting right into his shot. Chatman can play off or on the ball. When the ball is in his hands, he can create scoring opportunities for his teammates. When the ball isn't in his hands, he finds spaces in the defense for easy layups and open shots on the perimeter.
Chatman will earn his minutes with his scoring abilities. At the next level you have to be able to make shots. Chatman will be able to stay on the floor with his shooting skills. I see Chatman being a more ball dominant scoring PG instead of a combo guard. He can pass the ball very well and makes smart plays, so being ball dominant will help him. When off the ball, he could be more of a spot up shooter, where he will be more dominant. Chatman can score, but to stay on the floor he will have to be a more active defender.
