Drake Powell is a 4-star wing out of North Carolina and is the newest UNC Basketball commit. Powell can be an impact player for the Tar Heels right away due to his size, skill and versatility. Standing at 6’5, Powell is able to guard multiple positions on the defensive end and make different types of winning plays on the floor. Whether that’s being a disciplined defender on the perimeter and forcing difficult shots or sprinting back on defense for chasedown blocks. He plays well in transition, being able to secure defensive rebounds and initiate the fast break with an outlet pass or pushing the break himself with his slick handle and strong finishes at the rim.

Powell is a three-level scorer, possessing the ability to catch and shoot from the perimeter, attack closeouts and make mid range jumpers or being athletic at the rim finishing over the top of defenders and playing through contact. I believe Powell fits in perfectly with the Tar Heels at that wing position because of his decision making and versatility. I can see him fitting in as a Theo Pinson type of player for their system. He has the ability to initiate the offense due to his ball handling ability and high IQ. Can also play off the ball, playing off screens and knocking down shots in catch and shoot situations. Powell has the potential to be a real force as a two-way player in the ACC and I believe will be a key player for the Tar Heels from the moment he steps foot on campus.
